target=_blank>Four Dead In Prolonged Cult Clash In Lagos

The Guardian Nigeria

The week-long prolonged fight between two cultist group in Oworonshoki and Gbagada areas of Lagos State has left at least four people dead in the area.
The Eiye and Aye confraternities have been in continuous rivalry clash since last Sunday, July 21 2019, according to Punch Newspaper.
A trader at Fogo Junction, Iyana Owonroshoki, identified only as Iya Igbo, was said to be one of the victims. She was reportedly hacked to death by cult members who exploited the fights to rob innocent people.
It was learnt that some cult members had trailed a member of their rival gang to a bar at Kiniun Ifa Junction in the Sawmill area of Gbagada, around 6 pm on Sunday and shot him dead.
Three hours later, a gang believed to be on a revenge mission, unleashed terror on Fogo Junction during which the weed merchants and another woman selling slippers, were attacked with cutlasses. The latter reportedly escaped with injuries.
The women had reportedly resisted the hoodlums who wanted to dispossess them of their money and phones.
On Monday, some suspected cult members shot dead a barber, one Olorunwa (aka Injection), in his shop on Oyegunle Street, Oworonshoki.
The clashes were said to have disrupted commercial activities in the areas and caused panic.
Olorunwa’s shop was locked on Thursday when our correspondent visited the street.
A shop owner, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said that the assailants rode on a motorcycle.
She added, “They shot the barber and fled immediately. He died on the spot. It was policemen from the Alonge division who came to pick his corpse. On Wednesday, we have to close shops quickly when the cult boys started chasing one another again.”
Agboola Bakare, the community leader, said lives had become worthless to the hoodlums, noting that their violent activities had denied people of peace in the neighbourhood.
Bakare, who also confirmed the barber’s murder, said there had been calm in Oworonshoki for some time, until a week ago when the “uprising” began.
He urged the police to intensify patrols in the neighbourhood.
He said, “We live in fear every moment; the fear of children in the age group of our grandchildren. We understand some of them are in secret societies. We don’t know who to trust and discuss this issue with. The fear is that the elders you want to discuss it with may have their children in those circles.
“We don’t move freely again, especially when night falls. We meet with the police from time to time to find solutions to the problem. Maybe prayers will be the ultimate solution to the horror we find ourselves in. Some people blame it on joblessness. But are children in secondary schools qualified to take up appointments? Some of them are involved in this crime.”
A resident of Kiniun Ifa Street, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the area had become so charged that people now stayed indoors as early as 8 pm.
He said it took a combined team of policemen from Ifako and Bariga divisions to disperse the rampaging gangs on Sunday evening.
“Many traders now close their shops once it is 7 pm to avoid being caught up in the violence. A man was killed on Sunday in front of a beer parlour. I also learnt that they (cult members) killed a rival group member in Odo Eran, Oworonshoki,” he added.
The Chairman, Kiniun Ifa Residents’ Forum, Mr Jagun Adebowale, urged the police to beef up security in the area.
He lamented that most times, the hoodlums would have caused huge damage before police arrived the scene.
“The atmosphere is not friendly. What we have is graveyard peace. People ply their trade-in panic,” the chairman added.
At Fogo Junction, some plain-cloth policemen were seen searching some men suspected to be cult members. They arrested a man and took him away in a Sienna car.

target=_blank>Police Want Us To Pay Damages Before Releasing His Corpse–Family Of Slain UNIPORT Student

Obi Udochukwu, the brother of Obi Chinedu, who was shot and left to bleed to death at Ota Police Station in Ogun State has said that the Ogun State Police Command has held on to the corpse of his brother.
Udochukwu, in an interview with SaharaRpeorters, said the command refused to release the corpse of his brother to the family for burial.
He said: “They seized his corpse pending when we paid the damages. They said they would not release his corpse or any of his properties to us until we paid for damages. He is still in the mortuary over there.”
Abimbola Opeyemi, the spokesperson of the command, had claimed that Chinedu destroyed properties in a shop where he had gone to buy a phone before he was arrested and later damaged 17 vehicles at the police station when he went wild.
The command also denied shooting Chinedu and leaving him to bleed out. This appears contrary to what is seen in a viral video that showed Chinedu lying on the ground after being shot in the butt by the police.
The command’s spokesperson said: “The attention of the Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to a video recording of an incident that happened in Sango Ota police station which is being circulated on social media concerning a suspect allegedly been shot and left to bleed to death.
“The truth of the matter was that the suspect, one Chinedu Obi ‘m’ was arrested on the 19th of July 2019 at about 10:30 am in connection with a case of assault/ malicious damage. The suspect was taken to Sango Ota divisional headquarters for investigation. VIRAL VIDEO: Police Shoot UNIPORT Student, Watch Him Bleed To Death In Station@PoliceNG @frankmbablog @AsoRock @NGRPresident #JusticeforChinedu pic.twitter.com/ToXdJSiwtT— Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) July 27, 2019

“While he was being interrogated, he suddenly went berserk, picked an axe recovered earlier as an exhibit and started chasing policemen in the station with it. He ran out of the interrogation room to the premises of the station where he used the axe to destroy 17 vehicles parked within the station premises.
“Done with the destruction of the vehicles, he started chasing the policemen with the aim of using the axe on anyone around. At this juncture, an officer on duty, who was armed as at then, was left with no other alternative than to shoot him in the leg in order to demobilise him. He was then taken to general hospital Ota for treatment but later died while receiving medical attention.”
SaharaReporters asked Opeyemi why the corpse had not been released to his family member. He has not responded. The message was sent to him via WhatsApp through which he had forwarded the statement of the command. He did not reply to the message. The message showed the double blue ticks which indicate that the message had been read on Whatsapp.

Ahmad Lawan

Ahmad Lawan

Nigerians on social media have replied Ahmad Lawan, Nigeria’s Senate President, over his tweets  praising lawmakers for making some “sacrifice” by adding extra days more for the screening of the incoming minister before they proceeded on their annual recess.
The Senate is screening the President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees and has had to continue plenary despite their annual recess which ought to have started on Thursday.
The senate also sat on Friday and would continue sitting on Monday contrary to their standing rule. The Senate only sits on Tuesday to Thursday.
In line with this, the Senate President commended the lawmakers for their sacrifice and dedication to their legislative duties.
He tweeted: “Since my twenty years in the parliament, I have never witnessed such an unusual situation where senators will seat (sic) a daylong to perform their legislative duties, screening ministers. I want to thank my colleagues for the immense sacrifice they made in this regard.”
Nigerians have since mocked the senate president for his comments.
One of those who reacted to the tweet, @FFagishtee said, “You people are the most exotic legislators in the world… Give me 1/3 of your salary and I’d work till midnight…”
Another one said he would become a robot and work “40 days and 40 nights” if paid the bogus salary the lawmakers earn.
Lanre, with the handle @Cappy_son, said the lawmakers had not done anything special. “This ain’t no sacrifice, It’s duty call,” he said.
Another Nigerian with the     Twitter handle, @alphaolive, said: “I would have suggested that you should gather them (ministerial nominees) in one day and allow them to recite the second stanza of our national anthem and thereafter ask them to take a bow. After all, none of you knows the portfolio they would be deployed. This submissive collaboration will affect Nigeria much.
“Apologies sir, they are overpaid, pampered Nigerians. They should put in a good shift like the butcher in Sabo market, yam seller in Ketu market or vegetable seller in Bodija market. We must stop taking Nigeria for granted. So for 20 years, you have worked half-day for a full days wages,” tweeted Babatolly with the handle @babatolly.
Some, however, commended the lawmakers for their diligence.
Martyns Opuruichei Nsirim with the handle, @MartynsNsirim, said: “Finally, Nigeria have gotten the fit and proper Senate president whose interest is to move the nation forward working in unity with the other arms of govt. This is how democracy works. No arm is totally independent of each other. With this spirit of yours, the future looks bright.”
@Lawman283 said the 9th assembly is the Senate Nigeria has been longing for.
“The Senate we having been longing for…hardworking, synergizing with the executive arm and being firm at the same time for the good of Nigerians. Well done to you SP and also your colleagues,” @lawman283 tweeted.

target=_blank>Troops Parade Eight Kidnappers, Bandits, Recover Arms In Benue

Troops of the military spike operation code-named ‘Operation Whirl Stroke’ (OPWS) have arrested 10 suspected bandits and kidnappers in Benue and Nasarawa States, PUNCH reports.
But parading eight of the suspects before newsmen at the OPWS headquarters in Makurdi on Saturday, Force Commander of OPWS, Maj. Gen. Adeyemi Yekini said five suspects were arrested in Toto and Awe Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State while five others were arrested in Benue State.
Yekini stated further that one of the suspects was shot dead during an exchange of fire with troops at Zaki-Biam in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State while an AK-47 rifle was recovered from him.
He explained further that three out of the four suspects arrested in Zaki Biam were linked with the wanted militia leader, Terwase Akwaza, alias ‘Gana’ while another suspect was nabbed in Tomata area of the state with a locally made rifle fabricated to fire 5.56mm ammunition which is standard.
General Yekini explained that the pistol is as deadly as any standard assault rifle.
According to the Force Commander, one suspect that was arrested in Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State was handed over to the Nasarawa State Police CID because he was linked to another kidnapping in the state.
Items recovered from the suspects include two locally fabricated pistols, a self-loading rifle (SLR), five locally-made rifles, one AK-47 rifle, some quantities of ammunition and three phones with a Toyota Corolla.
Corroborating Yekini’s explanation, Sector Commander of Sector Three in Nasarawa State, Naval Lieutenant Emmanuel Igwe and his Ukum counterpart, Naval Lt. Lawal Abubakar said they carried out the operations following the directive by the Force Commander to deal decisively with armed bandits and kidnappers in their respective areas of operation.
Igwe particularly noted that the suspects were arrested after some kidnap suspects who were apprehended in Kogi State were brought to Nasarawa State by security agencies identified them as members of their gang.
On his part, Lt. Abubakar disclosed that weapons were recovered from the suspect that was killed during the exchange of fire while the other suspects linked to the kidnapping and armed banditry within the sector were also nabbed.
One of the suspects who spoke with newsmen confessed that he served as an informant to a kidnap kingpin who is now at large adding that he had given information which had led to the kidnap of a victim in Gwagwalada.
“After I gave the Fulani man the information and the victim was kidnapped and ransom paid, he gave me the sum of N30,000. The Fulani man told me that the victim was later released after a ransom of N320,000.”
Another suspect, Dominic Angyer, who was arrested in Guma said he was in his house when some people came and told him that troops of the OPWS were looking for a suspect who had run to his house.
“It was in the course of searching for the said suspect in my house that they discovered the pistol. Somebody who was owing me gave me the pistol with N2000 about two years ago with a promise that he would come back and collect it after paying me my money.
“But since then, he hasn’t come back to give me my money or collect the pistol. On my part, I just kept the pistol and I haven’t used it since that time,” he said.
Yekini, however, appealed to members of the public to always give information that could help in nipping crime in the bud in the state.

target=_blank>BREAKING: AAC Expels Ezenwa, Reinstates Sowore As National Chairman

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African Action Congress (AAC) has reinstated Mr. Omoyele Sowore as the national chairman of the party.
The NEC also announced the expulsion of Mr. Leonard Nzenwa from the party while rejecting the purported suspension of Sowore and Malcolm Fabiyi from the party by Ezenwa.
This decision was announced at the end of the NEC meeting through a communiqué signed by the Deputy National Secretary, Dr Joshua Adeoye, in Abuja on Saturday.
The NEC also rejected the ruling by Justice Iyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja removing Sowore as the national chairman positing that the court has no case dabbling into the domestic affairs of a political party.
The communiqué reads, “The NEC hereby affirms and reinstates Mr Omoyele Sowore as the one and only national chairman of AAC and Dr Malcolm Fabiyi as the Deputy National Chairman of the AAC Headquarters.
“All actions carried out by Leonard Nzenwa in the name of the African Action Congress including documents signed or authored by him, are hereby dismissed, set aside and completely nullified forthwith.”
The highest decision-making body of the party claimed that Nzenwa failed to appear before it to defend himself as required by Article 80 and 81 of AAC constitution when summoned and went ahead to forge official stamps of the party.
The committee, therefore, called for the arrest and prosecution of Nzenwa for forgery and perjury.
“The NEC affirms that the judiciary as decided by the Supreme court in several cases has no to dabble into the domestic affairs of a political party and is not a forum for determining the leadership of the political party.
“The party also resolved that the stamps used on documents submitted to the court by Leonard were forged with fictitious names and signatures.
“The highest decision making body of the party, therefore, found Nzenwa guilty of the offences in Article 80 (a) , (b) , (d) ,(e) and (f)  of the AAC constitution and therefore expelled him from the party in line with the provision of Article 81 (1) and 81 (2) (a),” the communiqué added.
The NEC hereby directs the national working committee to immediately petition the Nigerian Police Force and other relevant security agencies and insist on the prosecution of Nzenwa for forgery, perjury among other criminal acts arising from his felonious conduct.
The body has fixed its next meeting for September 2019 where the final decision would be taken and also proposed to hold its second national convention in December 2019.

target=_blank>Police Arrest Teacher For Defiling Pupil Inside Biology Lab

The police in Lagos have arrested a 28-year-old teacher, Idowu Daniel, at a private school in the Abule-Egba area of the state for allegedly having s** with a female pupil in his care, PUNCH reports.
Daniel, who teaches computer science at Anatasia Comprehensive College, reportedly raped the 17-year-old pupil inside the school’s biology laboratory.
It was learnt that Daniel had asked the pupil to bring her computer science note to him at the laboratory for marking.
On getting there, the teacher reportedly made overtures to her and fondled her breasts. She was said to have resisted the advances and left.
The following day, Friday, June 28, 2019, Daniel was said to have sent for the pupil again, asking her to come to the laboratory with her note. He reportedly shut the door and forcefully had s** with her.
Three days after, on a Monday, our correspondent learnt that Daniel called the girl into the laboratory again and told her that she did not do well in computer science and mathematics exams.
He again allegedly demanded s** from her so he could increase her marks in the two papers.
It was learnt that the girl declined the offer and reported the incident to the school principal, leading to Daniel’s arrest by the police at the Isokoko division, Agege, Lagos.
Narrating the alleged rape to the police, the pupil said Daniel covered her mouth to prevent her from shouting.
She said, “On Thursday (June 27, 2019), my computer science teacher sent a pupil to me to bring my note to the biology lab. As he was marking the note, he stopped and started pressing my breasts. I told him I didn’t like it and he asked me to go.
“On Friday, he sent another pupil to me that I should bring my note to the lab. When I got there, he stood up and closed the door. I asked him why he locked the door, but he did not say anything. He went back to his seat and started marking my note.”
The teenager said after a while, Daniel stopped marking and asked her to bend down, adding that before she knew what was happening, he grabbed her from the back.
She said, “He covered my mouth and raped me. He then asked me to go. On Monday, he asked me to bring my computer science note again to the chemistry lab.
“He said if I allowed him to have s** with me again, he would increase my marks in both mathematics and computer science exams. He said I did not perform well in his subject. I told him that I was not interested.”
The pupil further said Daniel told her to wait for him in a room where instruments were kept, adding that she vowed to report him to the principal if he continued to disturb her.
“He dared me to report him and I did,” she added.
However, Daniel, in his statement, said he only fondled the pupil’s breasts but did not penetrate her private part.
He said a pupil, identified only as Samuel, had reported to him that the girl exposed her breasts in the midst of male pupils while they were playing at the back of the school premises.
He stated, “While I was at the principal’s office, showing the principal the reshuffled examination timetable, she came for the marking of her note. I said I was busy and she waited for me outside.  As I was going to the staff room, she walked up to me and presented her book for marking.
“I stopped by at the biology laboratory to mark it and I asked her about what Samuel told me. She initially kept mute. When I said I would report her to her parents, she confirmed that what the boy told me was true.
“I sent for her the next day and she came. I tried to have s** with her but I couldn’t penetrate. I asked her whether she was a virgin and she said yes. I felt for her being a virgin and I stopped. I was at home when policemen came to ask for me. They took me to the school and accused me of rape. I accepted that I touched her breasts, but I didn’t rape her.”
A police prosecutor, ASP Ben Emuerhi, consequently brought Daniel before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court on one count of defilement.
The charge read, “That you, Idowu Daniel, on June 27, 2019, at 9.25 am in the Biology lab, at Anatasia Comprehensive College, Abule-Egba, Lagos State, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile a 17-year-old girl by inserting your penis into her vagina, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015,”
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, did not take the defendant’s plea.
The magistrate held that the case file should be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
She added that the defendant should be remanded in prison custody pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The case was adjourned till October 21, 2019.

target=_blank>Ministerial Screening: Nigerians Knock Senate Over ‘Take A Bow’ Ritual

Many Nigerians have condemned the approach of the Nigerian senate in screening President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.
They described the ‘take a bow and go’ culture at the screening as a farce and charade, adding that the trend won’t help the country as sentiments were priority at the expense of competence.
The ‘take a bow and go’ arrangement began in 2003 and it was introduced as a courtesy and privilege for any nominees who had been elected to the Senate or House of Representatives in the past.
The privilege is now being extended to all persons with previous legislative experience at state levels.
Nigerians are now witnessing the worst screening exercise in the history of the country with nominees, related to lawmakers, asked to  ‘take a bow’.
Other categories of nominees who now enjoy ‘the take a bow and go’ prerogative were all female nominees and all nominees from the state of origin of incumbent Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as well as national officers of the ruling party.
The beneficiaries include Godswill Akpabio ( Akwa Ibom), George Akume ( Benue), Emeka Nwajuaba ( Imo), Adeleke Mamora ( Lagos), Rotimi Amaechi  ( Rivers), Tayo Alasoadura ( Ondo).
Others are  Mustapha Shehuri ( Borno), Timipre  Sylva  ( Bayelsa), Abubakar Aliyu ( Yobe), Sharon Ikeazor  ( Anambra), Ramatu Aliyu ( Kogi), Sadiya Umar Farouk ( Zamfara ) were excluded from being grilled.
The privilege was also extended to Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo ( Ekiti), Chris Ngige ( Anambra ) and Muhammadu Musa Bello ( Adamawa).
The senate minority leader, Enyinaya Abaribe had called the attention of the senate to the negative effects of the policy.
He stated that in global parliamentary practices confirmation hearings were conducted for nominees to access their competence and qualification for the appointment of being a minister.
He explained that confirmation hearings were different from endorsement hearings.
Section 147 (2) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which granted senate the power to confirm appointments does not make a provision for the ‘take a bow’ policy.
Abaribe said, “This is a confirmation hearing, it is not  an endorsement hearing and I so move that we abide by what the constitution says.”
Some civil society organisations have expressed dissatisfaction with the senate for insisting on the policy saying it is an indication that the Lawan-led senate could become a rubber stamp and stooge of the executive.
In a statement by Executive Director Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic ( CASER), Frank Tietie, said that checks and balances which would have improved the performance of government would suffer when legislative scrutiny appeared to be lax.
He condemned the policy just as he called on the Senate to show a sense of seriousness and change of approach toward the screening.
In his reaction, the Director of Center for Democracy and Development ( CDD), Austin Aigbe, said that senate is charged with the duty to engage the nominees on topical issues that would liberate the country from the myriad of challenges being faced.
He said, “What we see now is that you are former senator, former House member so you bow and go. The funny one is that your brother used to be a member of the  National Assembly and you come from the area where the Senate President is from and because of that, you take a bow? What does that add to the Nigerian state?”
Some senators, were, however, uncomfortable with the policy which they said, did not give them the opportunity to ask nominees relevant questions.
Nigerians expected the lawmakers to subject other nominees to the same rigorous scrutiny that was given to a nominee Uchechukwu Ogah from ( Abia ) who took the first shot.
Many people have also faulted the President for not attaching portfolios to the nominees and making the whole exercise a mockery. They argued that the screening of the nominees without portfolios would give no room to understand their competence.

target=_blank>Bad Governance: Coalition For Revolution To Hold Nationwide Protests August 5

The Coalition for Revolution (CORE), a political movement of the Nigerian masses and youths, has declared to do a nationwide protest which will commence from August 5, 2019.
The group made the declaration in a statement.
CORE lamented the corruption prevalent in the political system and called for a complete overhaul of the system.
In a statement obtained by SaharaReporters, the group said, “It is quite clear that the Nigerian ruling elites and the current political regimes of both the APC and PDP at all levels of government can never resolve any of the crises plaguing the land as they are co-creation of the corrupt system that paves way for the problems in the first place. The situation has gone from bad to worse and still on the downward slide at an accelerating speed.
“There are currently more than a dozen armed conflicts going on around the country with deadly consequences and massive displacements of people. These confirm the reality that Nigerian is tending more towards a FAILED STATE where barbarism reigns supreme.
“Also, Nigeria is currently the country with the highest level of poverty globally. Daily reports of killings, kidnapping, attacks, corruption, etc are what currently dominates the media reports.”
The group called on young people in the country to take over the streets in protest until their demands are met.
It added, “The Nigerian masses and youths, therefore, have no choice but to stand up and storm the streets in protest and with their demands. The change they said never comes easy and if we do not stand up in the struggle for freedom, the chains would remain on our necks.
“Commencing on Monday, August 5, 2019, the Coalition for Revolution, would be leading a nationally coordinated protest movement. We have the right to be in a rage and to protest. The Aug 5 date was arrived at after series of consultations and meetings.”

E2%80%99s-accountant-general-refused-pay-civil-servants target=_blank>EXCLUSIVE: Corruption: How Office Of Nigeria’s Accountant General Refused To Pay Civil Servants Five Months’ Salaries

A payment slip issued out without payment

Some members of staff of the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta have expressed their grievances over the non-payment of their outstanding five months’ salaries.
In a document obtained by SaharaReporters, one of the four workers affected, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said he has been working at the hospital since July 2018 and only one month, (November), out of his 2018 salaries, was paid.
“I was given payment slips without payment, and inside the slip, it was written that they couldn’t get my account number. How can you pay my November salary without getting my account number first?”

The aggrieved workers, therefore, wrote a letter to the accounting section of the medical centre which gave them the go-ahead to write to Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
Several letters were written to the Managing Director of IPPIS without any success.
A letter was also written on behalf of the employees by the institution’s management to IPPIS and the accountant-general of the federation.

A reliable source told SaharaReporters that once the payment slip is being issued out “the money is gone” and nothing can be done.
Months after the letter was written, the affected workers were unable to get any response and that prompted the institution’s authority to write another letter as a reminder of the unpaid salaries.
It was also alleged that there are cabals in the finance section of the IPPIS that embezzle monies meant for workers in the federal civil service –but issue payslips to show salaries are paid.
Another affected civil servant said: “I think the whole manipulation is from IPPIS office. The finance office of my institution (FMC, Abeokuta) had written several letters to IPPIS but to no avail.

A payment slip issued out without payment

“I was told that once the payment slip was issued the money is gone and the payslip issued to me by December indicated that I have been  paid July,  August,  September, October and December 2018 whereas my account was not credited, nothing was paid into the account.”
When SaharaReporters contacted the Assistant Director of Finance and Account Department of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Mr. Samuel Idowu, he said the payment was not from the account section of the hospital.

“It is not that the management is deliberately holding their salaries and they don’t want to pay. The federal medical centre is not holding their money. The problem is from the IPPIS.
“Salary is not being paid by the institution. It is being paid centrally. The category of staffs is the new staff. They are not the old staff. Some had even made a personal visit to IPPIS that management made corroboration on their behalf to make their money paid to them.”
He claimed to have personally represented some of the members affected in Abuja and was told to inform the new employees to come with their printed account statement to ascertain if the money reflected in their account.
He said: “When you get your payment slip, to us it is assumed that the salary has been paid because it is the CBN/IPPIS that pay such a salary. When we were at IPPIS secretariat to complain, they informed us that such people should go and print their bank statement and tender which they did.”
“I believe when such persons had shown that evidence and there is no reflection of money in their account, frankly speaking, I do not know why the money should not be paid to them.”

Fulani Waging War Against Nigerians, To Drive People Away From Their Lands —Prof. Banji Akintoye

Dr. Banji Akintoye, leader of the Odua Foundation

Dr. Banji Akintoye, leader of the Odua Foundation

Foremost historian and a Second Republic senator, Prof. Banji Akintoye, has raised the alarm that Nigeria’s Fulani ethnic group is waging a war against non-Fulani Nigerians.
He stated this in an interview with Nigerian Tribune.
Akintoye asserted: “There is a lot of noise concerning what is happening, what the Fulani are bringing to the South-west now. We must not give the impression that it is focused only on us; they are against all the peoples who are not Fulani in Nigeria and they have made their statement. They don’t hide their intentions. They say that their objective is to drive people from their lands and take them; that they would kill, maim, destroy and take the land of these people.
“As far as they are concerned, it is a war and some of their leaders are already saying that if there is a war, the Yoruba are the ones that would first run and things like that. It means they are already fighting a war and some of their leaders have been saying it.”
The professor claimed that between 2013 and 2014 northerners were ready for war and the South was not.
“We are seeing the manifestation of all of that now. It is a war going on. It is no longer politics and the objective of the war obviously is what the Fulani themselves are saying,” he added.
Containing, he pointed out: “I was in Benue State on January 5, 2018. I was part of a delegation sent from the South West to join a delegation from the South East, a delegation from the South-south and one from the Middle-Belt to go and commiserate with the governor and people of that state over the large number of Benue people killed on January 1, 2018. It was a large gathering.
“The governor had gathered leaders of his state to come and receive us. After our leaders had expressed their commiseration, the governor stood up and said, ‘Thank you. I need to let you know that what has happened to us is big; many villages have been destroyed, many people have been killed, but the people who did it are now saying that they are coming back’.”
According to him, Governor Samuel Ortom brought out a letter written by the ethnic group which he allegedly received in December 2017, with the Fulani allegedly saying  they were coming because the state made a law to control open grazing.
“They came on January 1 and now they had written another letter to say they were coming back,” Akintoye explained.
He added, “The letter says, ‘Mr. Governor, people of Benue State, we see that you are mourning, doing mass burial and so on, but what is happening to you now is a little thing compared to the bigger ones that are coming, and the problem your people have with us in Benue State is that all those Tivs and so on people believe that the land they have lived for thousands of years is their land, it is not their land, it belongs to us Fulani. And we are not talking of Benue State alone, we are talking of all the peoples of Nigeria and we will take the land, no matter what they do.
“We have accumulated weapons and monies for the war, we have asked the Fulani living in the rest of West Africa to come and join us to take our land from the people of Nigeria and we are ready to fight this war for years and years to come and if you think your federal government can help you, you are deceiving yourselves’. So, that is what is happening. It is not we who are putting war into their mouth. Some people say we should not talk like that; that we are stigmatising the Fulani. We are not stigmatising, we are just repeating what we heard from them.”
